The State Administration for Market Regulation reported the situation of 31 batches of food failing to meet the standards in spot inspection, with prominent excessive food additives.

On January 3, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released a notice titled “Notice on the Non-Conformance of 31 Batches of Food Products in the Random Quality Inspection”. The notice stated that recently, SAMR organized a food safety supervision and spot inspection of 1,588 samples, and detected that 31 batches of samples were non-compliant. The main issues involved in the non-compliant food products include discrepancies between food additives and labels, over-use of food additives, organic pollutants, microbial contamination, excessive pesticide residues, heavy metal pollution, failure to meet quality indicators, and discrepancies between quality indicators and labels.

Discrepancies between Food Additives and Labels
The notice stated that an issue of discrepancies between food additives and labels was detected in a product sold by the Xiaogan Liu Big Lobster Crab Frog (operated by Liu Lu Snack Shop in Yuhuatai District, Jiangsu Province) on the mobile app platform. The product, called “Sauce Pearl Spicy Little Peppers” (a type of pickled vegetable), was produced by Kunming Ruixin Food Co., Ltd. under the authorization of Jinying Dai Women Food Co., Ltd. in Honghe and Yennyi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. The value of sorbic acid and its potassium salt was compliant with food safety national standards but did not meet the requirements indicated on the product label.

Over-use of Food Additives

The salted boiled peanuts (catering food) processed and sold by Puxi Tasting White Frog Baozi Shop (Driinks, Grains and Congee) in Tianxin District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, sold through the mobile app platform; its benzoic acid and its sodium salt did not meet food safety national standards.
The freshly cooked corn processed and sold by Baiquan Baozi Shop (豆浆·粥·粽子·天心区店) in Tianxin District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, sold through the mobile app platform; its sweeteners did not meet food safety national standards.
The spicy bean curd from Sizzling Wok with Original Taste SDU produced by Dechang Food Co., Ltd. (original place: Taiwan) sold at Tong’an Imported Food Store (Yuhuashan Yingfu Department Store in Yuhua District, Changsha City), Hunan Province; its Ponceau S and sorbic acid did not meet food safety national standards.
The skin of soybeans from Shaanxi Aerospace Base Cuisine Cuzhong Products Department Store sold by Sushi Bean Taste Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd.; its lemon yellow pigment did not meet food safety national standards.
The corn starch for culinary use processed and sold by Yongyi Food Co., Ltd. under the authorization of Guangdong Zhaoqing Yongyi Food Co., Ltd.; its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards.
The selected pear slices processed and sold by Shun Da Food Co., Ltd.; its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards.
The fermented酸菜 processed and sold by Tianmu Add Three Food Store (individual business); its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards.
The star anise sold by Hongxing General Store in Shilin Township, Panyu District, Guangzhou City; its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards.
The licorice olives processed and sold by Guaguan Food Shop on WeChat platform; its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards.
The apricot strips processed and sold by Erdong Anxi Axi Food Co., Ltd.; its residual amount of sulfur dioxide did not meet food safety national standards among others whose detailed information can be found in the notice.
Organic Pollutants Issue
An issue with organic pollutants was detected in “Changmao West Pacific Sand Shrimp (dried aquatic product)” processed and sold by Hainan Nongfu Bang Modern Agriculture Co., Ltd on JD.com platform; its N-nitrosodimethylamine content did not meet food safety national standards.
