Over 124 million passengers! Shanghai Airport’s annual passenger throughput hits a record high

At 23:57:50 on December 31st, 2024, with the arrival of flight HX234 at Pudong Airport, Shanghai Airport successfully completed its transportation support mission for the year 2024.

Public information shows that the two international airports of Pudong and Hongqiao are jointly operated and managed by Shanghai Airport Group. According to the statistics bulletin data provided by Shanghai Airport Group, in 2024, the number of flights handled at Shanghai airports reached 803,000, with an increase of 15% year-on-year. The passenger throughput exceeded 124 million, with an increase of 29% year-on-year. The cargo volume reached 4.206 million tons, with an increase of 11% year-on-year. With an annual passenger throughput exceeding 124 million, Shanghai Airport set a new record.

On the evening of December 31st, 2024, the terminals and airfields of Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai Pudong Airport were brightly lit. The vast number of cadres and workers at Shanghai Airport adhered to their posts to ensure the safe takeoff and landing of each flight and the safe travel of passengers.

In 2024, Shanghai’s air transport market stepped into an accelerated recovery phase. In collaboration with airlines, Shanghai Airport added 10 new flight destinations, increased frequencies for 19 routes, and resumed 8 others, especially for medium and long-haul routes as well as international routes along the “Belt and Road” initiative. Among them, Venice in Italy, Marseille in France, Manama in Bahrain, and Kazan in Russia were the first routes launched nationwide. The hub network covers 291 destinations in 48 countries worldwide. Shanghai Airport Group worked closely with airlines and joint inspection units to increase the annual transfer rate at Pudong Airport to 15.7%, which was a record high. Additionally, Shanghai Airport Group continued to strengthen its logistics hub function, connecting resources from both passenger and cargo flights to achieve transfer and freight forwarding business, launching a direct logistics model for the Yangtze River Delta’s off-site cargo stations. It also implemented convenient transportation for sensitive goods such as cross-border e-commerce products with electricity components. The cross-border e-commerce cargo volume reached a new high for the year.
