CAS holds a meeting to discuss next year’s election of new academicians and other related work

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) recently held an important meeting to discuss the election of academicians for next year.

According to the official website of the CAS, its 9th Academic Diversion Council held its 18th meeting in Beijing on December 14th. The meeting was chaired by Hou Guoan, the President of the CAS and Chairman of the Academic Diversion Council, and attended by members of the council.

The meeting discussed the preparations for the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the CAS and its academician system, the regulation of academicians’ social activities, and the election of new academicians.

The meeting pointed out that 2025 is the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the CAS and its academician system. It is necessary to earnestly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s “four role models” important指示requirements, adhere to the principles of standardization, simplicity, practicality and efficiency, and be based on academic research to prepare various activities in a solid and orderly manner. It is necessary to give full play to the leading role of academicians and continuously enhance the academic status and influence of the CAS. In accordance with the central government’s deployment to deepen reforms of the academician system, it is necessary to jointly safeguard the academic, honorary, and pure nature of the title of academician, and steadily complete the regulation of academicians’ social activities and the election of new academicians. The head of the CAS Bureau was present at the meeting.

The academician of the CAS is the highest academic title in science and technology established by the country, while the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering is the highest academic title in China’s engineering field. Since their establishment, both systems have been continuously improved with the development of the times.

According to previous reports by ScienceNet, academicians of both CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering are the highest honors in China’s scientific community. The first batch of academicians was produced in 1948. After the founding of New China, the CAS planned to establish an academic division system. In 1955, it officially announced the establishment of its academic divisions. Since 1997, both CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering have synchronously elected new academicians every two years.

The latest election of academicians was in 2023. On November 22, 2023, both CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering announced their respective lists of newly elected academicians for 2023. Among them, 59 new academicians were elected to the CAS in 2023, while a total of 74 new academicians were elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in its 2023 election.
