More than 80% of this year’s undergraduate graduates from Shanghai Jiao Tong University will continue their studies, marking the highest proportion in the past five years.
On December 17, Shanghai Jiao Tong University released the “2023-2024 Undergraduate Teaching Quality Report” (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”). The data shows that as of August 31, 2024, the overall employment rate for the university’s graduating undergraduate students reached 95.19%. The primary destination for these graduates is further education, accounting for 81.95%. A comparison of data from the past five years reveals that the proportion of graduates pursuing further studies is the highest in this period.
In 2024, the male-to-female ratio among undergraduate students exceeded 2:1. The Report indicates that Shanghai Jiao Tong University had a total of 4,074 undergraduate graduates in 2024, with an actual graduation number of 3,970, resulting in a graduation rate of 97.45% and a degree conferral rate of 99.85%.
As of October 2024, 27 graduates from the 2024 cohort secured employment in national defense technology units and military services, 18 were accepted as directed recruits, and 72 found jobs in the central and northeastern regions of China. By August 31, 2024, the overall employment rate for the university’s graduating undergraduate students was 95.19%. Among them, 3,097 graduates, or 81.95%, chose to pursue further education, with 838 students studying abroad, representing 22.18%.
A comparison of the enrollment data over the past five years shows that the 81.95% figure for 2024 is the highest in this timeframe. Specifically, the percentages for previous years were 72.61% in 2023, 67.60% in 2022, 62.64% in 2021, and 75.67% in 2020.
The Report also reveals that Shanghai Jiao Tong University plans to enroll 4,838 undergraduate students in 2024, with an actual attendance of 4,768, resulting in an attendance rate of 98.55%. Among various admission channels, 2,461 students were admitted through the national college entrance examination, 1,005 through the comprehensive evaluation admission reform pilot in Shanghai and Zhejiang, 295 through the Strong Foundation Program, and 131 through recommendations for foreign language students.
In the 2024 undergraduate cohort, students from rural households accounted for 15.2% (734 students), while those from urban households made up 84.8% (4,104 students). Han students represented 90.5% (4,380 students), while students from other ethnic groups accounted for 9.5% (458 students). The proportion of female students was 30.2% (1,460 students), and male students constituted 69.8% (3,378 students), resulting in a male-to-female ratio exceeding 2:1.
In 2024, three new undergraduate programs were added, and 21 “AI+ Micro Majors” were established. The Report indicates that Shanghai Jiao Tong University has 30 undergraduate teaching units and 85 undergraduate programs, with engineering disciplines comprising 38 of them. To meet national strategic needs and regional economic and social development, the university introduced three new undergraduate programs: Environmental Design, Health Science and Technology, and Sports Training.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University has 60 programs recognized as national-level first-class undergraduate programs and three recognized as provincial-level first-class programs. This includes 11 programs accredited by engineering education certification, three by medical education certification, 15 included in the “Excellence Engineering Talent” Program 2.0, one in the “Excellence Legal Talent” Program 2.0, four in the “Excellence Medical Talent” Program 2.0, three in the “Excellence Agricultural and Forestry Talent” Program 2.0, and seven in the Basic Disciplines Top Students Cultivation Program 2.0.
In line with the “AI+ Education and Teaching Action Plan (2024-2026)” of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a selection of urgently needed national programs focused on future scientific frontiers, industrial transformations, and social governance will be piloted (with nine initial AI+ programs). This initiative aims to integrate AI technology, AI knowledge, and the wisdom of top scientists with talent cultivation methods to develop outstanding innovative talents empowered by “AI+HI.” Following the trend of interdisciplinary studies, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has established 21 “AI+ Micro Majors” to cultivate interdisciplinary talents in artificial intelligence that meet the demands of the new era.
Regarding teaching reform, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has introduced the “Four Major Plans” to deepen undergraduate education and teaching reform, focusing on key issues such as “ensuring every student gains educational value, making excellent students even better, and preventing students from falling behind due to academic challenges.” Among these, the “Bole Plan” aims to select 30 “Bole Phase One” students for personalized training under the “one student, one plan” model, with four students receiving funding for youth research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation. The “Leap Plan” has initiated the revision of training programs, releasing the “Guiding Opinions on Revising Undergraduate Talent Training Programs,” which focuses on optimizing the curriculum structure, enhancing practical training, and improving the overall quality of talent cultivation.
As of September 30, 2024, the total number of full-time students at Shanghai Jiao Tong University was 50,494, with undergraduates making up 36.8%. The number of regular undergraduate students for the 2023-2024 academic year was 18,607, including 4,811 first-year students, 4,355 second-year students, 4,128 third-year students, 4,356 fourth-year students, and 957 students from other years.
