The “East China Normal University Station” has finally arrived, and several subway stations in Shanghai are named after universities.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Station, Fudan University Station, Tongji University Station, Shanghai University Station, East China University of Science and Technology Station… Now, East China Normal University Station is finally coming to Shanghai.

On December 8, reporters from The Paper learned from East China Normal University that the station of the Shanghai Metro Line 23 at Jiangchuan East Road has been named “East China Normal University Station.”

East China Normal University stated that although the Jinshajiang Road subway station at the Putuo campus has been in operation since the early 2000s, and the Metro Line 15 connected the two campuses in 2021, there was previously no subway station named after “East China Normal University.” The establishment of Line 23 fulfills the expectations of students, faculty, and alumni, as they now finally have a subway station that bears their university’s name.

Additionally, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has also gained another subway station named after the institution. On December 8, Shanghai Jiao Tong University announced that the station of the Shanghai Metro Line 23 at Hujin Expressway has been named “Jiao Da Zizhu Road Station.” The station is located east of the intersection of Hujin Expressway and Dongchuan Road, with Exit 1 approximately 180 meters from the South Gate 2 of the university and Exit 4 about 300 meters from South Gate 3, making it just a 3-minute walk to the campus.

On the same day, Shanghai Jiao Tong University also released the station’s design renderings. The university noted that the semiconductor research and development center is located to the south of the station, while the Minhang campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is to the north, making it an important gateway landscape node for the university. To highlight the cultural and educational characteristics of the area, the station’s design concept is “Wisdom Scroll,” inspired by the pages of a book. The station structure is designed as two overlapping pages, continuing the curled page shape into the supporting facilities, transforming them into landscape features. The design integrates a beautiful life box and a landscape leisure square, providing a culturally rich recreational space.

According to previous reports from The Paper, on June 24, the section between Jiangchuan East Road Station and Zilong Road Station (downline) of Shanghai Metro Line 23 successfully achieved connectivity. Shanghai Shentong Metro introduced that the first phase of Shanghai Metro Line 23 is a new urban line in the latest round of the city’s rail transit network, linking important areas such as the Minhang Development Zone, Zizhu High-tech Zone, Wujing Transformation Area, and Xuhui Riverside Area, passing through the Minhang and Xuhui districts. The total length of the line is approximately 28.63 kilometers, with 22 stations.

The Paper also noted that there are currently six other subway stations in Shanghai named after universities: Fudan University Station on Line 18, Jiao Tong University Stations on Lines 10 and 11, Tongji University Station on Line 10, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics Station on Line 18, East China University of Science and Technology Station on Line 15, and Shanghai University Station on Line 7.
