Cheng Lian, Professor of Philosophy at Wuhan University and Member of the China Democratic League, Passes Away at the Age of 60

According to reports from the Philosophy School of Wuhan University, Cheng Lian, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Philosophy School of Wuhan University and a member of the China Democratic League, passed away in Wuhan at 3:18 AM on November 30, 2024, after unsuccessful medical treatment. He was 60 years old.

Cheng Lian was born in Wuhan, Hubei Province, in August 1965. He underwent undergraduate studies at the Department of Information Science of Wuhan University from September 1982 to September 1986, pursued his master’s degree at the Department of Philosophy of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from September 1986 to July 1989, and completed his doctoral studies at the Department of Philosophy of Lehigh University in the United States from August 1994 to June 1998.

After graduating in 1998, Cheng Lian worked at the Department of Philosophy of Peking University, serving as a postdoctoral researcher, lecturer, and associate professor before joining the Philosophy School of Wuhan University in 2009 as a professor and doctoral supervisor.

According to the Philosophy School of Wuhan University, Cheng Lian devoted his life to academics and teaching, diligently engaging in thought. His main research areas included philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and ethics. He was one of the founders of the International Program in Modern Philosophy at the Philosophy School of Wuhan University.

He taught major courses such as “Metaphysics,” “Philosophy of Mind,” “Philosophy of Language,” “Ethics,” and “Political Philosophy,” nurturing a group of outstanding undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. He authored representative works including “Thought and Argumentation,” “Key Terms in Ethics,” and “Introduction to Ethics,” and published over 40 academic papers and translations.
