Wild Boar Intrudes on Yangtze University Campus: Authorities Respond Swiftly
Published on: November 23, 2024
Last night, two wild boars were spotted running across the campus of Yangtze University in the Caidian District of Wuhan. In response, the university employed drones, thermal imaging, and enlisted a professional wild boar capture team to manage the situation. So far, two boars have been captured, while one remains at large.
Incident Overview
Videos circulating online depict a black wild boar running down steps within the campus, while another clip shows a boar dashing across a campus road towards an office building.
In light of these sightings, the Yangtze University Management Committee issued a safety notice, alerting students and staff about the wild boars and confirming that they are actively coordinating with local police for searches. To ensure personal safety, the university advised against venturing alone into secluded areas and instructed anyone spotting a wild boar to immediately contact campus security at 69110110 and retreat to a safe zone.
Capture Efforts and Challenges
The university’s security department reported that upon discovering the wild boar intrusion, they collaborated with the Caidian Public Security Bureau to search for and drive away the animals. Three police teams were dispatched, and subsequently, a professional wild boar capture team was called in.
Last night, the authorities identified two boars: one large weighing approximately 100 pounds and a smaller one between 10 to 20 pounds. Unfortunately, one wild boar managed to escape. “It jumped into the lake,” an official explained.
The operation to drive away the boars began on the night of November 21 and continued until 12:30 AM on the 22nd. The university utilized trained dogs, drones, and thermal imaging. Although they managed to locate and mark the hiding spots of the wild boars, the darkness hindered successful removal.
While searching for the escaped boar, security personnel made noise in the thick bushes but failed to locate it. “At 12:30 last night, the wild boar jumped into the lake and then headed towards the residential area,” the officer recounted.
Origin of the Wild Boars
When asked about the source of the wild boars, the official remarked, “Our campus has a good ecological environment, with dense grass and forests. Moreover, the campus is surrounded by lakes on three sides, making it difficult for the boars to be contained by walls.”
It is believed that the boars likely descended from the nearby mountains, which are abundant with wild boar populations due to the rich ecological environment of the Caidian District.
During inspections, the university staff discovered two potential entry points, identified as areas used for student activities. They suspect that the wild boars may have entered through these sites.
Future Precautions
Following the incident, the university has reinforced its ecological and safety management protocols on campus to ensure the safety of students and staff.
This unusual event highlights the interaction between urban environments and wildlife, prompting discussions on handling similar occurrences in the future while maintaining safety and environmental integrity.
