Shanghai Traffic Police: The peak of pre-Spring Festival travel is expected to be around January 25th, with a daily passenger flow of about 1 million.
On January 14th, the Spring Festival transportation for 2025 kicked off. This year’s Spring Festival transportation will start on January 14th and end on February 22nd, spanning a total of 40 days.
Due to the relatively early start of this year’s Spring Festival transportation, the Shanghai police introduced that the overall passenger flow during this year’s Spring Festival will show the characteristics of “growth externally and stability internally”. The total passenger volume within Shanghai is expected to reach 49.61 million, with an increase of 14% year-on-year. Meanwhile, this year’s Spring Festival transportation will also exhibit characteristics such as increased traffic variables, increased road traffic flow due to self-driven travel, increased passenger and cargo transportation, and higher post-holiday return traffic.
According to transportation departments, nationwide, self-driven travel will dominate this year’s Spring Festival transportation, accounting for about 80% of trips. The risk of motor vehicle traffic violations causing accidents is relatively high.
Shanghai traffic police predict that the pre-holiday travel peak is expected to occur around January 25th (the 26th day of the twelfth lunar month), with about 1 million passengers per day, an increase of 12% year-on-year. The post-holiday return peak is expected to occur around February 4th (the seventh day of the first lunar month) and February 15th (the eighteenth day of the first lunar month). Among them, the number of arrivals on the seventh day of the lunar new year is expected to reach about 1.04 million, with an increase of 5% year-on-year. According to statistics, accidents during the pre-holiday travel period in recent three years account for 39.2% of the total accidents during the Spring Festival transportation, with an average of 1,880.6 accidents per day. Accidents during the post-holiday return period account for 52.7% of the total, with an average of 2,051.9 accidents per day. Among them, the last ten days of the Spring Festival transportation in recent three years have seen more accidents, accounting for 33.2% of the total accidents during the period, with an average of 2,284.6 accidents per day.
In terms of railway adjustments, this year Shanghai mainly involves four railway operation adjustments. Among them, the passenger flow in Hongqiao hub is expected to increase slightly, and the waiting time for short-distance rental channels will increase;铁路上海南站自1月5日起,沪昆高铁转移至上海南站后情况平稳,but the expected passenger flow on peak days will increase from 50,000 to 180,000, and the surrounding ground roads and Humin Elevated Road traffic flow are expected to increase; The passenger flow in Songjiang Railway Station is relatively stable, and it is expected that the peripheral road traffic pressure will increase on peak days; The newly opened city airport line is expected to have high traffic flow along the stations and surrounding roads on peak travel days.
In addition, during the Spring Festival transportation, there will be more passenger trips by buses and carpooling, and there will be strong demand for freight transportation such as energy supply and civilian goods. The intersection of passenger and freight transportation will increase safety risks, especially the risk of truck accidents. According to statistics, during the Spring Festival transportation in recent three years, there have been more than 4,000 accidents involving public transportation, road passenger transport, dangerous chemicals transport vehicles, and freight vehicles, resulting in 45 deaths. In addition, from recent observations, there are still many illegal acts such as passengers not wearing seat belts, bus overcapacity, and truck超载,and accidents caused by large trucks not stopping at right turns also occur frequently, which still have a relatively high risk of accidents.
