Which people can be members of the Chinese Olympic Committee?

According to the official website of the General Administration of Sport, the Chinese Olympic Committee held its 2024 plenary session in Beijing on December 25th. The meeting heard the 2024 work report presented by Chairman Gao Zhidan of the Chinese Olympic Committee, and approved personnel adjustment proposals. Li Jing, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Sport, was elected as the vice chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee.

On the same day, the Tenth Standing Committee Meeting of the All-China Sports Federation was also held in Beijing. Chairman Gao Zidan, Vice Chairmen Liu Guoyong, Zhang Jiasheng, Zhou Jinqiang, Lian Xiaomin, Deputy Director Li Jing and other attended the meeting. The meeting heard the work report of the Standing Committee and approved the adjustment plan of the federation personnel, adding Li Jing as a vice chairman.

Public information shows that Li Jing has served as the secretary of the Party Committee and director of the National Sports Cultural Development Center (China Sports Museum) of the General Administration of Sport, and has been appointed as the director of the Personnel Department of the General Administration of Sport in 2023. In November this year, Li Jing was promoted to Deputy Director and member of the Party Leadership Group of the General Administration of Sport.

The Chinese Olympic Committee, a nationwide mass non-profit sports organization, is tasked with developing sports and promoting the Olympic movement. Its main responsibilities and functions include: developing and safeguarding the Olympic movement nationwide in accordance with the Olympic Charter; promoting the coordinated development of competitive sports and mass sports; selecting athletes to form a Chinese sports delegation with the cooperation of relevant national single sports associations, and representing China in regional, continental and international integrated sports events; opposing any form of discrimination and violence in sports, and prohibiting the use of prohibited drugs and methods.

Since its restoration of legitimate rights in the International Olympic Committee in 1979, the Chinese Olympic Committee has participated in every Winter and Summer Olympics since the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, achieving outstanding results. In addition, it has successfully hosted international integrated sports events such as the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The Chinese Olympic Committee consists of a chairman, vice chairmen, secretaries, deputy secretaries, executive committee members, and committee members. Many renowned figures in the sports界 have served as presidents of the Chinese Olympic Committee, such as Zhong Shitong, Li Menghua, He Zhenliang, Wu Shaozu, Yuan Weimin, Liu Peng, etc. Among them, He Zhenliang was once rated as one of the most influential top ten sports leaders in foreign sports publications. He played a crucial role in Beijing’s successful bid for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Currently, Gao Zhidan, director and secretary of the General Administration of Sport, serves as chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Vice chairmen include Li Jing, Liu Guoyong, Zhang Jiasheng, Wang Ruilian, Zhou Jinqiang, Yu Zaiqing, and Li Lingwei.

Regarding who can be a member of the Chinese Olympic Committee, according to Chapter III, Article 8 of the “Charter of the Chinese Olympic Committee,” members of the Chinese Olympic Committee include unit members and individual members. They are composed of (1) representatives of national single sports associations for Olympic events; (2) representatives of national single sports associations for non-Olympic events; (3) Chinese members of the International Olympic Committee; (4) athlete representatives; and (5) representatives from the sports界 and all sectors of society. Many athletes who once dominated the competition field like Li Lingwei now serve as members of the Chinese Olympic Committee. They contribute new forces to the development of sports with their professional knowledge and outstanding achievements. They are not only sports stars but also promoters of sports development. For instance, some speed skating champions such as Zhang Hong, Ding Ning from table tennis, solid jumper Gong Lijiao from track and field, figure skating champion Shen Xue, freestyle skiing aerial trick champion Xu Mengtao are now executive committee members of the Chinese Olympic Committee. The well-known athletes who are members include short track speed skating star Wu Dajing, Olympic champions from cycling and other fields.
