On December 26th, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to introduce the results of the fifth national economic census. Kang Yi, the deputy group leader of the fifth national economic census leading group of the State Council and the director of the National Bureau of Statistics, stated at the meeting that after the joint efforts of more than 2.1 million census personnel, the data collection, review, and summary assessment of the census have been completed. The comprehensive census has clarified the second and third industries in China and reflected the new achievements made in China’s economic and social development.
Kang Yi expressed that China has conducted five national economic censuses. The results of the fifth national economic census showed that the number of second and third industries has increased significantly, absorbing more employees; enterprise asset scale has been continuously expanding, business income has grown rapidly, technological innovation capability has continued to improve, and labor productivity has increased; industrial structure optimization and upgrading, digital economy development and expansion, regional development coordination and balance have been continuously enhanced. Over the past five years, China has achieved remarkable results in high-quality development.
Kang Yi pointed out that the main purpose of the fifth national economic census is to comprehensively investigate the development scale, layout, and efficiency of China’s second and third industries, to understand the basic situation of various units, to grasp the economic links between different industries in China’s national economy, and objectively reflect new progress in promoting high-quality development, building a new development paradigm, constructing a modern economic system, deepening supply-side structural reform, as well as innovation-driven development, coordinated regional development, ecological civilization construction, high-level opening up, and public service system construction. The census further solidifies the statistical foundation, promotes statistical modernization reforms, and provides scientific and accurate statistical information support for strengthening and improving macroeconomic management, scientifically formulating medium and long-term development plans, and comprehensively building a socialist modern country.
It is clarified that the fifth national economic census is a major national survey. It started in November 2022 and lasted for more than two years. It has successfully completed various tasks such as organization establishment, publicity and mobilization, scheme development, pilot surveys, personnel training, division of census areas, unit investigation, on-site registration, data review and acceptance, quality sampling inspection, summary assessment, etc. It now enters the stage of major data release and data development and application.
