The Artificial Intelligence Application Conference for China’s Newspaper and Media Industry will kick off tomorrow, and attendees are “greatly looking forward” to it.

The 2024 China Newspaper Media Industry Artificial Intelligence Application Conference will take place in Shanghai on December 19-20. The welcome dinner for the conference will be held on the evening of December 18 on the Huangpu River, hosted by Chen Qiwei, president of the Shanghai Newspaper Media Industry Association.

During a keynote speech, Wang Yufeng, member of the Standing Committee of the Huangpu District Committee and head of the Publicity Department, introduced Huangpu District as the “heart, window, and business card” of Shanghai. He noted that both the geographical center of Shanghai and the zero-kilometer mark for roads in the city are located in Huangpu. Currently, Huangpu District is actively aligning with major national strategies and has successfully been incorporated into the first batch of Shanghai Free Trade Pilot Zone’s innovative link zones. The district aims to seize the trend of scientific and technological innovation returning to urban centers by developing a “Central Innovation Zone” in the World Expo Puxi area, focusing on digital technology and life health, backed by an “industry innovation system” centered on scientific and technological service industries.

According to on-site interviews by The Paper (www.thepaper.cn), this conference aims to explore the significant role of artificial intelligence technology in content innovation and paradigm transformation in the media industry, while strengthening cooperation and exchange in AI applications within the industry. Attendees expressed their strong anticipation for the conference while being captivated by the beautiful scenery of the Huangpu River.

The Shanghai Newspaper Group is actively embracing technological change and promoting the digital and intelligent development of media. The group is building an AI super platform to deeply integrate AI technology into the editorial process and provide comprehensive support for creative planning, content production, distribution, data analysis, and business operations, fundamentally restructuring the technological base for media convergence development. It is also upgrading the “Group AI Digital Human Integrated Media Creation Platform” by incorporating AIGC (AI-Generated Content) technology into all aspects of content production and dissemination, thereby improving communication efficiency. Additionally, it aims to accelerate iterations of integrated technology research and application scenarios to reshape production mechanisms multifacetedly, establishing innovative and leading mainstream media productivity.

Wang Guangqing, president of the Gansu Newspaper Association, disclosed in an interview with The Paper that he has visited the Shanghai Newspaper Group multiple times. He noted that in the new round of reforms, the Shanghai Newspaper Group is once again leading the way. “They proposed a systematic reform plan to digest surplus production capacity, which can be said to be a direction for guiding Chinese newspapers and the development of new media in China,” Wang said. “I feel that this conference on AI applications has hit the nail on the head. How the media can effectively utilize artificial intelligence is a new issue, and everyone, including journalists, editors, and technicians, is looking forward to this exploration, which Shanghai has already started.”

Mai Miao, Chief Technology Officer of Southern Newspaper Media Group’s Southern+ platform, believes that AI’s application in the media industry will be disruptive. “We’re integrating AI across the entire media supply chain. We hope that tasks suitable for robots will be handled by machines, allowing humans to focus on higher-level tasks to liberate better productivity and engage in more valuable activities. This is our vision and the direction we are striving towards. The greatest challenge lies in finding suitable application scenarios and improving accuracy when combining AI technology with media operations.”

Zhang Fei, head of the Information Technology Center of Anhui Daily Newspaper Group, also expressed high expectations for the conference: “This is urgently needed. How we, as media, can find entry points and implement application scenarios amid this wave of technological revolution is a field that every media organization is exploring and researching. We are here to truly learn.”

The 2024 China Newspaper Media Industry Artificial Intelligence Application Conference is organized by the China Newspaper Association and the Shanghai Newspaper Group, co-organized by the Shanghai Newspaper Media Industry Association and the Shanghai Internet Industry Association, with the Huangpu District Publicity Department serving as a co-organizer. The event is hosted by The Paper and the Industry Newspaper Branch of the China Newspaper Association, with academic support from the China Newspaper Magazine and Fudan University’s Smart City Research Center, alongside backing from companies like Koge Intelligent and Ant Group, and will feature numerous guests from the fields of artificial intelligence and media.
